Reiki

“Reiki is love, love is wholeness, wholeness is balance, balance is wellbeing, wellbeing is freedom from disease.”

Dr Mikao Usui

What Is Reiki?

Reiki can be translated as “universal energy”.

At Feather & Flame Therapies, we practise Reiki using the Usui system of natural healing, a gentle holistic therapy that supports relaxation, balance and overall wellbeing.

Reiki is based on the belief that energy can be used to support the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the self, helping you feel more grounded and connected.

A Reiki session is usually a calm, hands-on or hands-off treatment, offered while you remain fully clothed. Many people find it deeply relaxing and supportive during times of stress, emotional overwhelm or personal change. It can also be part of a wider journey of self-discovery, self-awareness and holistic wellbeing.

What Reiki Is Not

Reiki is not a replacement for medical care, counselling, psychotherapy or advice from a qualified health professional, particularly where there are serious physical or mental health concerns.

Reiki does not claim to diagnose, treat or cure illness. Instead, it is offered as a complementary therapy that may support relaxation, emotional balance and your body’s natural sense of ease.

Reiki is not a religion and is not connected to any one belief system. People from many different backgrounds can access Reiki in a way that feels comfortable for them.

How Often Should I Access Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle holistic practice that many people use to support rest, reflection and emotional balance.

It can be offered to adults, children and young people, and some people also use Reiki as part of their care for animals and plants.

People often describe Reiki as calming and restorative. It may help to ease feelings of stress, encourage deep relaxation and create space for the body and mind to slow down.

Emotionally, Reiki may offer a supportive space to pause, breathe and reconnect with yourself, especially during times of change, anxiety or overwhelm.

Spiritually, Reiki may support self-awareness, self-trust and a deeper sense of connection. Some people find that regular sessions help them feel more grounded, compassionate and in tune with their own needs.

In summary, Reiki is a calming holistic therapy that aims to support balance across mind, body and spirit, helping you feel more settled and connected within yourself.

How often do I need Reiki?

One Reiki session can feel supportive in itself, while a course of regular sessions may help you build a deeper sense of balance and relaxation over time. Some people choose weekly sessions, while others prefer fortnightly or occasional appointments. We can talk together about what feels right for you, and many people begin to recognise when they would benefit from a gentle “top-up”.

What Will My First Session Look Like?

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose clothing and arriving well hydrated.

You do not need to prepare anything in particular. Simply come with an open mind and allow yourself time to settle.

At your first session, we will begin with a gentle conversation about what has brought you to Reiki and what you are hoping to gain from the treatment. This helps us tailor the session to your needs and answer any questions you may have.

During the treatment, you will usually lie fully clothed on a massage table, although sitting comfortably is also an option, particularly if you have mobility needs.

Gentle hand placement may be used on or near different areas of the body. If you prefer not to be touched, hands can be held just above the body instead. Your comfort and consent will always be respected.

What Do I Need To Know As A Parent/Guardian For Under 16 Reiki?

Reiki for children and teens is offered as a gentle, non-invasive holistic therapy that may support calm, emotional balance and overall wellbeing.

Some young people find Reiki helpful when they are experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, sleep difficulties, emotional ups and downs, school-based anxiety, low self-esteem or a general sense of feeling unsettled.

Sessions are calm and supportive, using either hands-on or hands-off Reiki depending on the child or young person’s comfort and consent.

Parents and guardians are welcome to remain in the room during the treatment.

Reiki may support relaxation, reduced stress, improved emotional regulation, better focus and a greater sense of calm. It can also offer gentle support for children and young people with anxiety, social and emotional difficulties, behavioural challenges, ADHD, autism or low self-esteem.
